Sergio Giron Obituary

Sergio Giron passed away on December 31, at the age of 71, after losing his battle to COVID-19. He was taken to the hospital on December 10, for complications, due to the virus. He was later sedated and put on a ventilator. His family was able to talk to him, sing to him, and pray for him in his last days.

Sergio Giron was born October 9, 1949, to Alba Violeta Sierra and Coronel Enrique Giron in Guatemala City. He is the eldest son of Alba Violeta.

Sergio was always proud of his Guatemalan heritage.  He served as Guatemala’s Consul General for Chicago in 1989.  He often times referred himself as a “hombre de maiz.”

Anyone who knew Sergio will tell you without a doubt that he was a true musician, and that his love and passion was always music. His sisters cannot remember a time that Sergio was not strumming on his guitar. One of Sandra’s favorite memory of her brother was when he played with one of his first band Canela Fina, at her wedding in Guatemala. Sergio’s perseverance and passion for music, led him to follow his dreams in Chicago. He loved and enjoyed his time playing with the Pioneros Misticos and Los Mayas.

Sergio will be remembered for being cheerful and optimistic, all his nieces and nephews were gifted with his original rock inspired “Happy Birthday to you,” song.  Sergio is the reason his family has a love for the Beatles! He never gave up on his music and towards the end of his life joined a church, where he was inspired to write songs that spoke of faith and love for God. He said that those songs that he composed to God had come so quickly to him. His family has some peace knowing that our beloved Sergio is playing his guitar in heaven.

Sergio is survived by his loving wife, Esperanza Hinojosa, his sons Brian, Sergio, Derek, and his daughter Alexandra, along with his sisters Silvia and Sandra Gordillo, 2 nieces, 5 nephews, and 3 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alba Violeta Sierra Melgar.

Sergio will be honored at the Christian Funeral Home, 3100 W. Irving Park Rd., Chicago, IL 60618 on Friday, January 8, 2021. Visiting hours are from 5-9pm, they will only be allowing 20 individuals at a time.
