Philip Louis Engel was born on August 20, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to Edward and Esther Engel. He passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, family, and professional accomplishments that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Phil is survived by La, his devoted wife of sixty-two years. Their bond, built on years of companionship, laughter, and mutual respect, was a cornerstone of his life. He also leaves his cherished brother Thane, a family who adored him, as well as a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and mentees who were touched by his kindness and guidance.
Phil’s love for his family was matched only by his passion for the arts and his strong belief in giving back. A gifted musician, he studied at the Moody Bible Institute, arranging and orchestrating music that brought people together with the flute, piccolo, piano, organ, and harpsichord. Later, he contributed his time and expertise to various arts organizations, acting as the President of the board for the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. He also served on the boards for the Chicago Sinfonietta and the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada. A devoted leader, Phil also was president of the board for the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope and the Jane Addams Hull House Association. Additionally, he was deeply involved in providing pragmatic knowledge to the University of Chicago’s Physical Sciences Department.
A brilliant student, Phil graduated as valedictorian from Bowen High School and later attended the University of Chicago on a National Merit Award Scholarship, earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's in business administration. His professional journey took him to CNA Financial, where he ultimately served as president and made a lasting impact as a Life Actuary, a Property Casualty Actuary, and a principal of the American Academy of Actuaries. Passionate about education and mathematics, Phil also co-founded MATHCOUNTS, a program that continues to inspire junior high school students across the nation.
Known for his humility, Phil was the type of person who preferred to listen and observe, but when he did speak, his words were thoughtful and filled with insight. He had a dry wit and sense of humor, but always brought a smile to those around him. To his family, Phil was a steady source of support: A loving husband, caring brother, and attentive uncle. His presence was a quiet strength, and his encouragement helped many achieve more than they thought possible. His love for his family was unwavering, and his impact on them will endure for generations; his legacy is one of warmth, integrity, and dedication—values that will continue to guide those who knew him.
Phil may no longer be with us, but his memory will live on in the stories we share, the lessons he taught us, and the love he gave so freely. We will miss him deeply, but we are grateful for the years we had together.
