Elias P. Moschovis entered the presence of his Heavenly Father on July 26, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on July 21, 1930 to Panagiotis and Maria Moschovis in the village of Skopelos on the island of Lesvos, Greece, Elias grew up with his brothers George and Nikos, surrounded by the Aegean Sea and olive trees. His high school education at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece was interrupted by World War II, and after graduation, he traveled to the US to study chemistry. As a college student, he began to study the Bible, learning of Christ’s work which frees humanity from sin and brings salvation to all who follow Him. This began a life-long journey of faith, and he spent the rest of his adult life following Christ.
After graduating from Bob Jones University with a degree in chemistry, he worked as a researcher in synthetic organic chemistry at a variety of companies, including Sherwin Williams, A. B. Dick, Apeco, Desoto, and DSM/Desotech. He loved his work, finding great joy in setting up experiments and creating new compounds. He was awarded several patents for developing polymer coatings for applications in aerospace and fiber optics. Upon retirement, he brought that same love of chemistry to high school students as a teacher at Brentwood Baptist Christian Academy.
Along with a full-time job, Elias served as a lay minister in various capacities. He was an elder and Sunday School teacher at the Greek Free Church from the 1960s to 2005, teaching several generations of children about God’s love. For several decades, he also led a weekly Sunday morning service for residents of the North Shore Retirement Hotel. He also welcomed the opportunity to share his faith with countless people he encountered, often giving them a pamphlet along with a smile – “something you’ll enjoy reading!” Perhaps his greatest ministry was to his family, who will treasure memories of reading the Bible together over the years, his constant prayers for them, and his quiet, humble example of walking in Christ’s steps.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sotiria; children, Maria and Peter; son-in-law, Haris; daughter-in-law, Ariadne; grandchildren, Alexander (with granddaughter-in-law Kendra), Christina, Constantine, Evanthia, Sarah, Sophia, Lydia, Eleni, Maria, Elias, and Sophia; and great-grandchildren, Iasonas and Niovi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Panagiotis and Maria, and his brothers, George and Nikos.
A memorial service to celebrate God’s faithfulness in Elias’ life will be held on Tuesday, August 12, at 6pm, at the Greek Community Church (Armenian Evangelical Church) located at 905 W. Golf Rd. Mt. Prospect, IL. The service can be streamed here. The Moschovis family invites you to share in a time of remembrance and refreshments after the service in the church hall. For planning purposes, please let the family know if you anticipate joining the service in person (text Peter at 312-810-7880 or email petrosm@gmail.com). The Moschovis family would also welcome any memories, photos, or videos sent to petrosm@gmail.com.
For those unable to join in person, the memorial service will be streamed live at this link; a recording will also be made available after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greek Community Church.
